Taylor Wimpey North Thames are looking to take on a Groundworker Apprentice in a two year Apprenticeship Standard programme Level 2, during which time the successful candidates will be working on a busy new house build construction site in Hertfordshire.

The broad purpose of the occupation is to be involved with site preparation for new build homes from the start of the build process. Groundworkers are the first trade onto a construction and civil engineering site and they work closely with supervisors and engineers in interpreting design specifications to prepare the site ready for the structural building works to take place. Their work includes setting out and preparing the sub-surfaces ready for the structural work to begin, installing drainage systems, concreting, constructing roads and pathways and carrying out the finished hard landscaping.

A career in the construction industry is like no other. Groundworking is a core function within construction and an essential part of the build process in the house building sector.

Groundworkers ensure the site is suitably excavated, supporting utility services laid safely and to a high standard,  following all health and safety practices to ensure foundations are ready for further build by other trades in constructing homes.


What you will do

  • Conforming to health and safety in the workplace
  • Marking out and digging shallow trenches for drains
  • Putting up or dismantling the shuttering that holds setting concrete in place.
  • Installing and testing drainage and ducting
  • Installing ironworks relating to access covers and frames and gully grates and frames, including preparatory brickwork
  • Laying and smoothing concrete for foundations, floors and beams
  • Using and maintaining power tools and equipment
  • Operating equipment on site in a safe manner

The successful candidate will be employed by Taylor Wimpey during their apprenticeship and will work alongside trusted subcontractors to gather knowledge and skills in the trade.

What you will have:

  • English, Maths GCSEs at Grade C/ 4 or above
  • Awareness of Safety Issues
  • Knowledge of Properties/Housing preferred
  • CSCS Card preffered
  • Driving licence preferred

Checks and eligibility to work:

To be successful in this role you must be able to prove eligibility to work in the UK and hold a full UK drivers licence.   
If you are successful at interview and the Company considers making an offer of employment, you may be asked to give your consent to the following pre-employment check[s] being undertaken by our third-party provider, Experian (or any other appropriate third-party provider that the Company chooses to engage).   
The type of checks made will depend on the role in question but may include any or all the following

  • Criminal records (DBS);
  • Credit reference
  • DVLA
