Department Function

The Technical and Design department provides tools and guidance to the business, including standard house types, construction specifications and construction details. The guidance can be formal, such as documents like “Our Approach to Placemaking” and help given through the technical feedback forum, or it may be more ad hoc, with a simple phone call or visit to site to discuss an issue. The T&D team is also involved in the leadership of TW, through tactical or strategic interventions such as the development of a new house-type range, improving our groundworks design or running training programs for our design and technical staff. The T&D team also have a part to play in building the TW community, through events such as the Technical Directors conferences, the Design Competition, and the Design Leads conference. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Deliver and drive technical information in a consistent format across all schemes and the department. 
  • Design, Implement and maintain a Quality Management Process to ensure Technical information meets the high quality expectations of the business. 
  • Provide knowledge/expertise to react to changes in legislation as dictated by industry standards of Building Control, NHBC, planning etc.  
  • Ensure all Key Performance Indicator targets are reached across all areas of Technical in line with business aspirations.  
  • Manage and comply with the process and procedures contained within the Taylor Wimpey Operating Framework. 
  • Manage and implement the Taylor Wimpey CDM/EMS process and procedure, deputising for the regional Principal Designer, identifying foreseeable risks in designs and taking action to remove risk, in line with company policy. 
  • Provide the primary communication channel between the technical team, other internal departments and external agencies. 
  • Arrange, co-ordinate and manage all technical meetings with other departments in a timely and efficient manner, ensuring all relevant action points are noted and recorded. 
  • Prepare and maintain design programmes and documents for the monitoring of progress and for use in reporting to the management team. 
  • Assist in the evaluation and appraisal of development opportunities to purchase new sites. 
  • Liaise and negotiate where necessary with Statutory Authorities, Local Planning Authorities, Highways, Consultants etc. to ensure projects achieve the set objectives and programmes. 
  • Manage/oversee the delivery of key strategic infrastructure projects. 
  • Management of the Technical team and responsible for all Technical, Engineering and Design teams and responsible for overseeing architectural, planning and engineering priorities. 
  • Management of the Technical team to ensure that all designs, engineering, and technical issues are dealt with within the development programme and budget. 
  • Able to manage the individual team members' performance to company values and rules including, mentoring, coaching and support. 
  • Ensure appropriate resourcing of projects. 
  • Management of external consultants to ensure information is received, co-ordinated and distributed on time and within budget. 
  • Assist the Technical Director in recruitment, selection, training, coaching and personal development of the Technical team.
